We're here to help!Managing Gestational DiabetesDo You Know Required Steps To Managing Gestational Diabetes? There are several things involved in managing gestational diabetes. These include checking your blood sugar regularly, watching your diet and getting some exercise, all of which should also be monitored by your physician. Monitoring your glucose/blood sugar levels is the first step in managing gestational diabetes. As for checking your blood sugar you will need a glucose monitor to do this. These are easy to come by and can be purchased just about anywhere including your local chain discount store. Most insurance companies will pay for them similarly to any other prescription if medically needed and if not many companies will provide them free of charge, so all you will need to purchase or have your insurance cover is the test strips and lancets. Generally you will be checking your blood sugar four times per day. Once upon wakening, prior to eating anything and then once 2 hours after breakfast, lunch and dinner.Your physician will also suggest that you eat a diet that is limited in carbohydrates in order to manage your gestational diabetes and may even have you meet with a dietary specialist in order to make proper food choices. You will not need to eliminate sugar and carbohydrates completely, but you will have some restrictions. Things that you will need to avoid or limit will be sugary drinks, cereals, sweets in general, juice and other foods that contain a lot of sugar or a lot of carbohydrates. Performing regular exercise such as walking is also an excellent method for managing gestational diabetes. By getting regular exercise you will help your body regulate your glucose/blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, in some cases even if you eat a proper diet and get exercise it is still not enough for managing gestational diabetes and keeping your gestational diabetes under control. In some cases medication is need in order to keep blood sugars at appropriate levels. |
